Bonaire Activities


Whether you come to Bonaire for a week or a month, as a diver or a non-diver, there is always something to do for the outdoors-minded visitor of any age or fitness level! Here is a list with a few of our favorite things to do. The Sand Dollar Front Office Staff (in the guest reception area) will be pleased to assist you in contacting local outfitters or tour companies when you arrive.

Mountain Biking

Mountain biking is the perfect way to tour the island at your own pace along miles of uncrowded roads or off-road trails. There are several outfitters on Bonaire who rent mountain bikes for independent exploration. Many of the companies conduct bike tours as well.

Kayaking

Whether it's kayaking in the crystal clear waters of the open sea or exploring the secluded passageways of the Lac Bay mangroves, kayak programs offer something for everyone.  Programs ranging from novice to the highly challenging are available from a variety of outfitters.

Bird WatchingThe Tropial, part of the Oriole family, is commonly seen and heard on Bonaire

Bonaire's unique location off the Venezuelan coast attracts migratory birds in transit between North and South America. Bird watchers can also observe various species only found in this part of the Caribbean. 

Windsurfing

Bonaire's windsurfing satisfies beginner to professional level surfersBonaire's windsurfing takes place on the windward side of the island in the Lac Bay area of  Sorobon, where the water is warm and no more than waist deep, the winds are steady and perpendicular to shore, and the scenery is breath taking! Lessons and rentals are available from 2 top-notch facilities!

Kite Boarding

Kite Boarding takes place on the south-west side of Bonaire where the steady trade winds make for ideal boarding for beginners and experts alike. Kite boarding lessons are available from expert instructors. Lessons are available and calm and crystal clear waters to teach you the ins and outs of kite boarding.

Washington Slagbaai National Park

Washington Slagbaai National Park is the first nature sanctuary of the Dutch Caribbean island. It was established in 1969 and covers an area of 5.643 hectares. A wide scope of recreational and educational activities is available in Washington-Slagbaai National Park. There is something for everyone regardless of their age and desired level of adventure. Harley Motorcycle Tours

Bonaire Guided Motorcycle Tours is offering visitors an exciting new way to see the island - following a professional guide while riding a Harley. Half day and whole day customized tours are available to visit sights and places you've never seen before. Participants must have a valid motorcycle license and be 25 years old or older.

Bonaire Donkey Sanctuary

Donkeys have been living on Bonaire for hundreds of years. Once modern transport made these animals superfluous they were left to their lot. Unfortunately the donkeys did not fare well with their freedom. Founded in 1993 Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire cares for more than 400 sick, wounded and orphaned donkeys. Visitors are welcome to go for a drive amongst the hundreds of donkeys, or take a walk through the meadow where the jennies and foals needing special care are kept. Open for visitors daily from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Butterfly Farm Bonaire

BonaireThe Butterfly Farm "hosts the most colorful butterflies from around the world.” The shady cool confines of the butterfly greenhouse offer a pond where butterflies dance along the water. Peek among the vivid flowers and bushes along the path to catch a glimpse.  Bonaire’s butterflies come via a South American nature protection program. Butterflies are bred for captivity – not taken from the wild. Some profit from the nature program helps to replant rainforests. Butterfly Farm Bonaire is a Member of the International Association of Butterfly Exhibitions, IABE. Refreshments and restroom facilities are available as well as a gift shop.

Magazina di Rincon

Magazina Museo Mangazina di Rei, (Warehouse of the King), offers a glimpse of Bonaire’s traditional living. The Museum includes the replicas of homes, limestone kilns and charcoal pits in the open-air section of the museum. Just before Rincon (take the main road) you'll find Mangazina di Rei (Warehouse of the King). This is the second oldest stone building on Bonaire. It was originally used to store provisions for the government slaves. The structure has recently been completely restored. A museum, an open air museum of historic houses and a botanical garden have just been completed.

Rooi Lamoenchi Kunuku-Park

Discover the history and traditions of an authentic Bonairean Kunuku in a guided walking-tour through a serene and ecological preserve of nature. Including an old plantation house and aloe fields.is certainly worth a visit, although it's not officially a museum. Discover the history and traditions of an authentic Bonairean Kunuku in a guided walking-tour through a serene and ecological preserve of nature. Highlights are the old plantation house, aloe fields, a hand-made dam from 1908, the remnants of an old slave wall, pleasant ocean views, interesting flora and fauna and old kunuku tools. Tours are daily, by appointment.

Kaminda di Arte

Since November 2010, a group of Bonaire’s artists commenced a new art project on the island of Bonaire in the Dutch Caribbean. That project is called “Kaminda di Arte” (translated into English from Papiamentu, that would be “Path of Art”), also known as the Bonaire Art Tour (in English) and de Kunstroute Bonaire (in Dutch). As part of their participation in Kaminda di Arte, each of the involved artist will offer a monthly showing at their galleries, ateliers, or homes on the third Sunday of each month from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm.
