How to Clean Mold on Leather Furniture
Bring them Outside
One thing to note, mold actually only needs one spore to create its colony. Bringing your leathered sofas outside can prevent them from spreading around the surface. This is a necessary step to do before you even start to clean them up.
Use a soft-bristled brush and or dry cloth to wipe away the spores. Keep in mind that it’s just an initial cleaning, so it’s fine if you still see some spots on the surface.
Use the Solution
Now, it’s time to mix the detergent and warm water as the solution to further clean the sofa. However, if you have leather saddle soap, it would be best to use it instead. Here’s what you need to do:
- Use a clean cloth or sponge and soak it into the solution
- Wipe the surface of your leather sofa thoroughly.
- Clean up the soapy residue by using a separate wet dry cloth.
- Let the leather dry completely, but do not place it under direct sunlight since it may damage the quality of the weather.
- To speed up the drying process, you can use a fan.
Kill the Spores
Prepare the clean plastic container and mix cool water and alcohol in equal parts. Soak a dry clean cloth to the mixture and wipe down the leather to completely kill the spores.
When you are sure enough that you have completely wiped down the entire surface, allow it to air dry. The leather should be perfectly dry before you continue to the next step.
Recondition the Leather
Once the leather is cleaned, you can’t directly use the furniture. As a natural material, leather contains some natural elements like oil which is important to maintain its durability.
Reconditioning the leather is an important step that you can’t skip. If you do skip this, the leather can crack and the mold will be back easily. You can find a lot of leather conditioners in the market that doesn’t only maintain the condition of the leather but also keep it looking shiny all the time.
You can prevent the mold from coming back by controlling the humidity, temperature, and airflow around the room. Placing a humidifier and opening the window in your living room or bedroom can be an easy way to get rid of the mold of your leather furniture.
